AFW success story

In 2000 Actaris Metering Systems SA (Pty) Ltd (Actaris) approached Application Frameworks (AFW) as technology partner in fulfilling their vision of becoming the market leader in South Africa and of growing the African market and increasing their market share. AFW’s objective was to develop the information systems that facilitate all business processes associated to the operation of highly sophisticated and advanced prepayment electricity systems that are used by most South African municipalities and numerous utility companies across Africa, including
• South Africa – Eskom (parastatal utility)
• Mozambique - Electricidade de Mocambique (EDM) (state utility)
• Angola - Empresa Nacional de Electricidade (ENE) (state utility)
• Tanzania – Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) (state utility)
• Namibia – NamPower Corporation (state utility)
• Burkina Faso - Societe Nationale de l'Electricite et du Gaz (SONELGAZ) (parastatal utility)

Actaris is the lead organization in the partnership and manufactures the physical prepayment meters. Typically the field installations of the meters are outsourced to subcontractors managed by Actaris while AFW manages and performs the ICT systems development and 3rd line operational support components of projects. The systems developed and maintained by AFW include high volume transaction systems, management reporting systems, asset management and business process facilitation systems. Most of the field implementations are offline systems operational in remote and rural areas.

The partnership between AFW and Actaris has been a mutually beneficial one. It has been ongoing for more than 5 years and during this time we have completed numerous projects in Africa, creating a successful, sustainable and profitable partnership with revenue growth in excess of 500% (five hundred percent) over the period.
